In Pursuit...

Everyone is in pursuit of something...

Everyone is in pursuit of something. The question is....what are you in pursuit of? What do you find of value in this life? Some people are in pursuit of fame, money, perfection, a good night's rest, a next meal, a chance to be yourself, the perfect job, a day free of addiction, a family that gets along, a long-lost friend, happiness, forgiveness, love, lust, a one night stand, a soulmate, or perhaps nothing at all.

I was on a road trip not too long ago. I was driving in the middle of California miles from a town in either direction, and I noticed a man walking alongside the highway with only a backpack. It was midsummer, so it was probably over 80 degrees outside with a light breeze. My first response was complete empathy. My heart went out to this man regardless of how he got there. My mind started racing and wondering where he was headed. I wondered if he was running away from something or perhaps simply in search of a better place. I wondered what decisions got him there.

Did he make a mistake? Did someone make a decision for him that led him down a path of destruction? Maybe it was a serious of bad choices. I didn't know. I began thinking about what he was possibly in pursuit of. Was it a next meal? Was it a better town or was he just simply walking until it was physically impossible for him to take another step. Perhaps, he was simply living in the moment. I guess I will never know, but regardless, it got me thinking. I left that moment with a renewed sense of gratitude for the many things that I have in my life, and I reminded myself of the necessity to make good decisions. It also got me thinking about what I am in pursuit of and how I can get there.

As my mind raced, I realized that I am a person that is constantly going. I am constantly thinking, doing, or a combination of the two. It makes sense as to why I have a hard time falling asleep at night. In my mind, there is always something more to do, more to learn, and more to think about. I would definitely classify myself as a searcher. I am always in search of something whether it be stillness, peace, success, money, stability, intimacy yet independence, safety, the truth, security, love, acceptance, and so forth. I think to sum it up.....I am in pursuit of happiness, but...aren't we all? It seems that the hope that happiness is on the horizon gets us out of bed in the morning. No matter how dark our days might be it seems that all we need is a small glimmer of hope that better days are ahead. Perhaps, happiness surrounds us, but we just don't have the right glasses on. Look closely, because experience has taught me that happiness exists in the little things.
