Happy Valentine's Day!
Love, Love, Love...
Today is a celebration of love - Love for those we have in our life, and love for those we simply hold in our hearts and minds. The reality of it all is that relationships only exist in our hearts and minds, more specifically our thoughts. We mentally create the love that we have or don’t have for other people through our thoughts, and based on our thoughts, we put our love into action. Love is invisible. It is intangible. It actually doesn’t exist in the physical realm, only the spiritual, which we create within our minds. Interesting, huh?
One concept that I find very interesting related to this idea is how we attach expectations to our relationships. A common practice of human beings is that once we have classified a person in our mind as our girlfriend/boyfriend/partner/spouse or even just a “special someone”, we attach a paradigm of expectations of how we think this person should act. This paradigm is similar to a set of rules that this person is, in our minds, expected to follow. We established this set of rules from a picture that we created a long time ago as to what we thought someone should act like being in this role. Unfortunately, this paradigm of pre-set expectations that we enforce ultimately leads to the demise of many relationships. Marriage or relationship counselors will often advise couples to treat the other as you would treat a friend.
Anyways, just something to think about. In the meantime, spread some love, whether it be in the form of phone calls, voicemails, text messages, an email, flowers, cards, a hug, a kiss, cookies, whatever. Love yourself as well as someone else. Have a great day!
