The Power of Positive Thinking to Improve Your Life

by Rebekah Harkness

Napoleon Hill once said, ”Whatever the mind of man can conceive and believe it can achieve.” This is quite a powerful statement regarding the potential that we hold within ourselves. It is a power that we don’t fully utilize in creating our reality and reaching our dreams. Could life really be that simple? Sure, it is, but the important thing to understand is how your habits of thinking and your beliefs drive everything that you do and as a result create your life.

Your beliefs and thoughts fuel and determine your feelings and behavior. Your behavior then creates your habits, which in turn creates our reality. As you can see, the power behind your thinking is somewhat camouflaged underneath the chain reaction that each thought starts. The important thing to understand is that this chain reaction that creates the quality of your life ALWAYS starts with your thoughts. Your thoughts are where your power is. Whether you decide to take control over it or not, your thoughts are creating your reality, so you might as well decide to be the one steering the ship so to speak.

Let me illustrate this principle by an example to clarify what this means. Let’s say that you carry the belief that you are fat. Initially, your thoughts created this belief and now that the belief has been solidified in your mind, your thoughts are going to automatically reinforce and look for evidence that supports this belief. This belief and your thoughts start dancing. Your belief and your thoughts dance endlessly in circles fueling each other as time goes by. Your belief was initially created by your thoughts and observations. You created a reference point in your mind as to what you thought skinny looked like and you formed the belief that you didn’t fit in that category, so as a result you formed the belief that you are fat. Without any conscious effort, your thoughts are going to automatically support and look for evidence that supports this belief. Your belief about yourself and your thoughts start dancing. Perhaps, you might start to compare yourself to others looking for evidence that supports your belief, every time you look in the mirror you might say to yourself, “Geez, I am so incredibly fat and disgusted with myself.” All of your thoughts related to your body image reflect your belief that you are fat, so as your belief and thoughts feed off of each other, you remain stuck in this negative thought pattern which as a result, your feelings, actions, and habits have no other choice but to reinforce and support your belief and maintain this reality that you have created.

If you were to maintain this belief and think the same thoughts associated with this belief, your life and reality would reflect this so called truth that you created in your mind. Your habits would continue to support this belief that you are fat. Your habits have the responsibility to keep you fat. They are simply following the chain of command and listening to their boss, which is your belief. Your habits are one of the best employees that ever existed in this world. If your belief says, “Jump.”, your habits ask, “How high?”. If is their job to keep your belief alive, so all you need to do is take the initiative to change your belief and think more positive. As soon as you change your belief, the chain reaction takes a completely different path.

Now take a minute and think about your own life. Think about a belief that you hold about yourself, and think about how that belief has shaped your reality. Do you notice that you think thoughts that support this belief? How has this belief affected your thoughts? How have your thoughts affected your actions? How has this belief created your reality? I would really like to encourage you to do some self-exploration and really think about these things. The beauty about this process of how are beliefs and thoughts create our reality is that we can control it and manipulate it in our favor if we choose to do so. By paying more attention and better consciously controlling our thought patterns, we can create the reality that we really want. In my next segments, I will talk specifically about how you can do that. In the meantime, take a look inside your mind and explore your beliefs about yourself and think about how those beliefs affect your life. Take advantage of the power that you hold within yourself and control your thoughts. Do you want to change your life? If the answer is yes, then you must change your thoughts. There is no other way around it. Practice the habit of positive thinking and see for yourself how powerful it really is.
